Top Ten Tuesday: Cry me a river

TOP TEN BOOKS KLEENEX SHOULD SPONSOR

I read to escape. To live several lives without having to leave the comfort of my living room. How could I pass up emotional reads?

10- Harry Potter and the Deadly Hollows

Too many loses and secrets revealed. It was the first time I ever had to control myself not to skip to the ending.

 9- The Kite Runner

They say people cry out of frustration. Well, this book made me tear with anger. How could that little boy be so mean to his friend? Argh! It still gets to me now.

8- The Fault in Our Stars

I dare anyone to read this and not cry.

 7- On the Jellicoe Road

Not sure if this book will make other folks list, but the subject is too close to home for me not to feel the character's pain.

6- Before I Die

Beautifully written. Not only dealing with dying from cancer, but also mother/daughter relationships and accepting that even though you are gone others will continue living their lives.

5- The Lovely Bones

Although the murder scene is shocking, the saddest part of the book is watching her father helpless.
4- If I Stay

This was in my top four last week (how weird is that). Losing her entire family -- too tragic to simply swift through the pages.

3- Wonder

A little kid being bullied for his appearance. The Halloween scene got me plucking the Kleenex box.

2-  Frostbite

The mother and daughter moment at the end. There is something sad when you see a strong character cry.

1- Twenty Boy Summer

Not having anyone to share your grief with.

Review: Heartbeat

"If there were something I could do to Dan that would hurt him, I'd do it."

Emotions are raw in Elizabeth Scott's latest novel Heartbeat.

Emma's mom died from a complicated pregnancy (over 40) -- a baby that Dan, her stepfather, desired more than anything. It isn't surprising that given the option, Dan would choose to keep his wife on a breathing machine until the baby is ready to survive on its own.

But Dan fails to understand Emma's internal struggle. How can she accept her mom is gone when she sees her everyday at the hospital. The womb moving as the baby grows. No wonder Emma is angry and filled with resentment.

Most of the book takes place in the first thirty days following the mother's death, making this quite an emotional read. Bad boy Caleb provides a well needed distraction. And even though Emma is desperately in need of some chemical balance, her attraction to Caleb builds up slowly.

Love-o-meter theme: Sweet, shows the benefits of straying away from instalove.

Top Ten Tuesday: Switcheroo

TOP CHARACTERS I'D NEVER TRADE PLACES WITH

Surprisingly, this list was easy to make. There seems to be a lot of characters I would never trade places with, no matter if it meant I'd get to keep the hot male lead.

10. Cassia from Matched

Sure Cassia got Xander as a match -- but who would I get? I don't think I want to take the chance to live in a society where your soul mate is chosen for you.

9- Violet from The Body Finder

Having a sixth sense can be helpful, unless your sixth sense is communicating with dead bodies. No thank you!
8- Tana from The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

This book gave a depressing view of vampires. They were mean, ruthless and extremely unsexy. Wouldn't want to walk around among them.
 7- Lena from Delirium

 Two words: Forced Lobotomy.
6- Mary from The Forest of Hands and Teeth

Zombies aren't my thing.
5- Katniss from The Hunger Games

Self-explanatory.
4- Mia from If I Stay

Losing your entire family in a car crash, and seeing it happen is something I don't wish to anyone.
3- Alva Jane from Keep Sweet

Growing up in a cult, and forced to marry an old man when you are in love with someone else. Yucky!
2- Piscine from Life of Pi

No way! I'd rather be in the Hunger Games than be stuck at sea with a lion for so long.
1- Rhine from Wither

The entire population in Rhine's world dies at 20 to 25 years old. Gah! I'd be dead.
